Code of Conduct logosThe leader of the Polish data center market has been accepted by the authorities of the European Code of Conduct for Data Centres Energy Efficiency program as an Endorser – an organization actively supporting action to reduce energy consumption at data centers.

The Code was created in 2008 for the purpose of preparing solutions enabling reductions in quantities of electricity used by data centers. It is supported by 240 organizations, including such corporations as Microsoft, Dell and IBM.

Atman became the first and so far only Polish data center operator to join the European Commission program in June of last year, at the same time receiving a prize for the energy-efficient solutions deployed at its server facilities.

– Robert Mikołajski of Atman commented: Having been a Participant in the program for several months, we were nominated to become an Endorser. Apart from the exchange of experience with other organizations involved in the program, and strengthening of our know-how, we also gained the opportunity to have a real influence on the direction to be taken under initiatives to improve the energy efficiency of European data centers.

The tasks of Endorsers include promoting the Code with the aim of expanding the list of suppliers belonging to the program, emphasizing the importance of joint action – for both operators and customers – and reporting to the organization’s authorities annually on the fulfilment of undertakings to implement energy-efficient methods at data centers.

Time to respond

The Code focuses on reducing data center electricity consumption in two areas: IT hardware and site infrastructure, including cooling systems and emergency power supply. This is a direct consequence of the growing energy requirements of European data centers. Ten years ago their total annual consumption stood at 56 TWh, but by the end of the decade this figure will have almost doubled, to 104 TWh.
