Massed DDoS attacks, which exhaust server resources and can bring down websites and services, are currently the most serious cyberthreat – one that even leading Internet businesses have difficulty defending against.

Atman, in collaboration with CloudFlare, offers sophisticated protection against DDoS attacks. This protection can match the refinement and scale of such threats, and can be used to counteract DDoS attacks of any type and size.

What is a DDoS attack?

A DDoS attack is an attempt to make a server or network resources unavailable to Internet users. Most attacks take place in the network and transport layers (layers 3 and 4) and in the application layer (layer 7) of the OSI (Open System Interconnection) model.

Preparing a DDoS attack does not require sophisticated IT knowledge.There are many commercial “stresser/booter” services available on the Internet, which allow anyone with a credit card or bitcoins to order a DDoS attack for a relatively low price.

Traditionally, DDoS attacks were directed against layers 3 and 4 of the OSI model, and aimed to overload the interface with surplus traffic so as to exhaust the resources of the target site. DDoS attacks on layer 7 are smaller in terms of the quantity of traffic, but are technically more sophisticated. These attacks are hard to detect and counteract, because they imitate normal application use and are directed against specific web resources.

The CloudFlare smart platform

CloudFlare has developed a new technology, which makes use of the huge quantities of information downloaded from a wide range of websites, APIs and other network resources. This technology analyzes traffic and network activity parameters in real time with the aim of identifying atypical or malicious requests. When a new attack is identified, CloudFlare automatically starts blocking that type of traffic with respect to both the web resource in question and the whole community of CloudFlare network users. This way of using information from the community means that the more CloudFlare users there are, the better protection each of them receives.

CloudFlare protects web resources against attacks in the application layer using intelligent global network mechanisms. Because there are 2 million websites in that network, every month more than a billion unique IP addresses reach CloudFlare. The size of this web traffic makes possible the rapid identification of malicious traffic and of botnets, which are used in DDoS attacks and in attacks exploiting the vulnerabilities of applications in layer 7.

Every new attack against any customer causes the system to learn and become strengthened. This knowledge can subsequently benefit all users of the network.

Under Attack mode

If the CloudFlare system does not react quickly enough, the possibility is offered of deploying a first line of defense – known as Under Attack mode – in less than 30 seconds. When this option is enabled, CloudFlare deploys an additional set of security measures protecting the server against malicious traffic directed against the application layer.
The Under Attack feature is designed so as not to block search engine mechanisms, “whitelisted” addresses or other pre-verified traffic.
